Appointed by Pave Aways, Hughes:O’Hanlon Architects is responsible for detailed design development for the conversion of The Wrekin Buildings in Wellington town centre. Restoration of this landmark building is part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s ongoing commitment and investment into the regeneration of Wellington.
One of a number of projects in the town’ conservation area to which we are appointed, this development is part of the wider Investing in Telford and Wrekin programme which is seeing significant investment and transformation across the borough.
Built around 1908 the building previously served as a military hospital, Child’s Welfare Centre and YMCA.
Funded by the Towns Fund and Capital Regeneration Programme, the extensive sensitive refurbishment and re-modelling of the upper floors, including the addition of a new mezzanine floor level, will create nine social housing apartments for Nuplace Ltd.
Ground floor accommodation is being re-modelled to provide two commercial units for let.
Refurbishment includes a thermal upgrade to the fabric of the building with heritage style double-glazed windows and individual MVHR to each apartment.
Care has been taken to retain and protect many of the original architectural features internally and externally with particular challenges around fire and acoustic performance.
The project will breathe new life into one of Wellington’s most historic buildings and safeguard its future for generations to come.
